Our Mission

To preserve the print, photographic, digital and video records of local and state history including genealogy and make them available in the Library for research and duplication.

The Heritage Room may be used in the summer months by appointment only. You may schedule an appointmnet for the Heritage Room by calling 269-649-1648 or by emailing vicksburglibrary@yahoo.com.

Rules for Heritage Room Use:

Researchers may use the room and the resources in it after signing in at the circulation desk. Users must have either a Vicksburg District Library card or a valid state-issued driver’s license or ID to use the room. The Library furnishes a notebook and a pencil since no bags, purses, binders, or personal notebooks or folders are permitted when using Heritage Room material. We offer 5 free copies of materials in the room and they are 10c / page after the 5 complimentary copies.

About the Heritage Room:

Our beautiful local history room is a part of the original Library founded and financed by Vicksburg resident and Ladies Library Auxiliary member, Fanny Bair. The Library opened in November of 1902. In this room you will find local obituaries, marriage records, census records, directories, photographs, tombstone inscriptions, biographical information about local pioneers, important members and families of the community, as well as Civil War records, plat maps, and atlases dating back to the 1850s. The room also contains Vicksburg High School yearbooks dating back to 1946 as well as bound volumes and microfilm of The Commercial Express newspaper dating back to 1879.

We also offer Ancestry.com for free use by patrons in the Library.

If you make a request for Genealogical / Local History research by our Librarian there may be a fee. Less than 15 minutes and up to 5 copies is free of charge. More than 15 minutes has a fee of $10.00 / hour with a $10 minimum. Copies after the 5 complimentary are 10c / page. Postage will be added if sent through the mail.
