Holiday Movies

It's always fun around a holiday season to watch the movies made about it. This is especially true of holidays in the cooler season when you snuggle up with popcorn and your blankie and watch a good holiday movie.

Halloween has a lot of good movies to watch, especially if you like to be scared! But there are also some for different age groups and some for the family to watch together. Many of them are not so scary, just entertaining. The classic sitcom Roseanne had a love for Halloween and their episodes about it have been put on DVD. The Library has about 30 Halloween movies of all these types.

It is harder to find good movies about Thanksgiving, but there are some. We usually think about "Miracle on 34th Street" as a Christmas movie, but it begins with the Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade, so it's pretty seasonal for that holiday too. If you've never seen "Planes, Trains and Automobiles" you have a lot of laughs coming. With Steve Martin and John Candy, the comedy is sublime. It's good enough for a rerun every year at this time. Another comedy about Thanksgiving is "Dutch" which can be appreciated by teens and adults. Charlie Brown has two Thanksgiving movies. Garfield has one. Four good Thanksgiving movies for adults are "Scent of a Woman" with a great role for Al Pacino; "Nobody's Fool" with Paul Newman, Bruce Willis and Melanie Griffith; "Home for the Holidays with Holly Hunter and Hannah and Her Sisters" - a great Woody Allen movie with an all-star cast.

Christmas movies - ah, there are dozens of really great ones! The library has 66! We'll talk about them here in December.
