Week 38: One Last Week of Warm Days

I was rather amazed to look at the Weather Channel app on my phone this morning to find that the dwindlingdays of summer are working to give Michigan one last hurrah this coming week. Temperatures are going to be spiking in the mid-80s, leaving fall jackets to wait another week for use. If you’re like me, you’ll be craving to get in one last marshmallow or s’more over the bonfire.

Last week, the library settled into the transition of the school year normal. School age patrons have returned to their classes and mainly visit in the afternoons and evenings. Senior citizen patrons tend to come in mostly during the day just before or after lunch. Our infant and toddler patrons get in for story time events before catching naptime in the early afternoon. So slowly, but surely, we have all settled into our new routine until we reach Thanksgiving break in a few months.

That being said, we have a couple of events coming up this week that you should definitely keep on your calendars!

This Wednesday, September 19th, from 10:00 to 11:00, we will be having Party in the Park for our daycare and preschool kids! The event, taking place at the Vicksburg Historic Village, will include a free book for each participant, costumed characters, and lots of stories. Be sure to REGISTER for this event and contact us with any questions.

Also coming up later this week will be Brown Bag Lunch for our adult community. On Tuesday, September 18th from 12:30 to 3:30, bring in a sack lunch and visit with friends and companions.

The work on our updated website continues. One feature we are working to roll out is our PATRON REVIEW section! We are asking you, our patrons, to let us know what you think about an item you borrowed from the Vicksburg District Library. Was there a book you just couldn’t put down? Did an audiobook you listened to have you on the edge of your seat? Did the latest video game we just got in have you up playing all hours of the night? Well, we want to hear about it! In exchange for your review, it could be featured on our library blog, website, and social media. So don’t be afraid to fill out the FORM and let us know your thoughts!

Please keep these OTHER EVENTS in mind for the next week:

  • September 20th @ 6:00pm: Library Board Meeting
  • September 24th @ 7:00pm: Quilter’s Class
  • September 26th @ 1:00pm: Writer’s Roundtable
  • September 27th @ 6:30pm: Sign Language Class

Week 37: Kid Programs Start Up and the Website is Rocking

On this cool Monday morning, it is quite apparent that autumn is in the air in Vicksburg. The breeze is cool and crisp, the leaves a just starting to change color, and the kids are all back in school. We have been pretty busy here at the library as well.

We all enjoyed seeing you on August 28 at the VHS Tailgate! We had a great time meeting future patrons and loyal friends as we passed out candy, stickers, bags, and program information to everyone. We were all beat after a fun (but warm) two hours. Phew! To those who confessed to us that they didn’t have a library card (whether with us or with another library), have no fear. You can come in anytime during library hours and sign up for your VDL card. If you are signing up for a reciprocal card, please note you must have a library card from your home library before you can come register for your Vicksburg card. Please call us if you have any questions.

This morning, after a short hiatus, our kid programs have started up once again. Story Time is currently in progress. This program occurs weekly on Mondays from 10:30am to 11:15am. On Tuesday the 11th this week, we will also have our kickoff for Homeschool Book Club 12:30pm to 1:30pm. Open to grades 3 to 8, bring a bagged lunch with you and be ready to talk about what you are reading right now!

Adrianne is still hard at work with adding information to the library website. Soon she will be adding to the Collections page with hot new items from each genre. We will also soon be asking for submissions from patrons for reviews of items in the library. We will be featuring these items on our Social Media website tab, so if you would like to help out and be featured, let us know!

We will be adding a weekly blog post every Monday letting you know what is coming up at the library, recapping events from the week before, and all other matters of news. So be sure to check back here weekly to stay in the know with the Vicksburg District Library!

New and Updated Website

Welcome to the new and updated website for the Vicksburg District Library! Webmaster Adrianne has been busy working on bringing a more user friendly site to the library’s patrons. Thus far, it looks like it is paying off!

Overall, the layout and format of the website are what have changed. However, we are working to bring you the same access and information that we always have, plus more!

We are hoping to add more resources in the future for your use. This includes homework websites for students, information about upcoming programs and events, and reading lists for our avid readers. We are also looking for more ways to reach our patrons through social media and have you, the patron, contribute to the library through suggestions and material reviews. If you are interested, just let us know!

If you have any comments or suggestions for the new website, be sure to let Adrianne know at her email. She is hoping to hear from you and is hoping you enjoy the new website experience!
